Cannabis and Aromatherapy Guide

You don’t even need to get into the science of aromatherapy to understand why it exists. Instead, we’ll appeal to your common sense when discussing its effects on the mind, body, and soul.

First, imagine yourself in a scenario where your surroundings aren’t smelling too hot.

We’re not going to get into specifics here for the sake of keeping things civilized (i.e., not gross). Still, we’re sure you’ve been in pungent situations that weren’t too kind to your olfactory senses.

Think then about how you felt in those foul-smelling scenarios.

When you’re in an environment that stinks enough, it impacts your mental health—you’re immediately in a bad mood. It can also affect you physically, making you feel sick to your stomach and possibly tense.

Okay. For the good of all things decent, let’s move on from the bad smells and focus on the good ones.

You could be at a great restaurant with rich, fragrant aromas or a massage therapy session with scented candles. Perhaps your significant other is wearing perfume or cologne that drives you mad. Either way, you get our point. We’re speaking of yummy smells—good times for all.

Consider how those smells make you feel. You’ll likely be happier and more relaxed. Depending on the scent and how much comfort it offers, it might increase your appetite or help you get to sleep.

Do you see how we don’t even need to get into the science of aromatherapy to convey its value? When things smell good, it makes life better—it’s as simple as that.

Of course, there is a science to aromatherapy. But it’s important to us to break it down to its most straightforward ideas rather than murk it up with overcomplicated details.

Also, we don’t have to stretch that far in relating aromatherapy to cannabis.

Who of us doesn’t get a wide smile on our face when we smell a fresh bud or after we spark up and those familiar unctuous scents swarm and satisfy our nostrils? Who’s mood doesn’t improve vastly when their favorite sativa, indica, or hybrid smells like heaven on earth?

On the above note, you might wonder, “Why does cannabis smell so gosh-darn good?”

The answer is terpenes, which are responsible for the odors and flavors in your preferred strains. Given these factors, terpenes play a crucial role in how cannabis can offer consumers aromatherapeutic benefits—the topic of this article.

How Do Terpenes Help You Relax?

This section will discuss three cannabis terpenes most associated with relaxation: linalool, myrcene, and limonene.

Linalool has a noteworthy relationship with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Note that the ECS regulates and controls many bodily functions critical to our well-being [1]

When linalool interacts with the ECS, it modulates serotonin, acetylcholine, and other neurotransmitter activity. These responses lead to positive, therapeutic benefits in the central nervous system.

Due to linalool’s impact on the ECS, it’s believed to aid in pain management, inflammation, and mood regulation when present in cannabis. These properties are all conducive to heightened relaxation.

As for linalool’s aromatic qualities in cannabis, it possesses a citrus scent that’s sweet and spicy [2].

Cannabis possessing myrcene interacts with your ECS in a manner that leads to a sedating and relaxing effect, helping with falling asleep and also reducing pain, anxiety, and stress [3]. When you smoke strains rich with myrcene, expect earthy, peppery, and spicy scents and flavors [4].

Limonene also helps regulate pain when it interacts with the ECS. It can trigger mood regulation and boasts anti-inflammatory properties, bolstering the therapeutic effects when indulging in strains rich in this particular terpene [5].

When present in cannabis, limonene offers traditional citrus scents that you’d find in fruits like orange, lime, and lemon [6].

Cannabis-Derived Aromatherapy Techniques

Here are a few possible ways to mesh cannabis with your aromatherapy practices:

  • Purchase cannabis extracts with high terpene counts and place them in a diffuser. Be sure that the oil you’re using doesn’t have any carrier oils or other ingredients without hemp. In fact, the safer option could be to purchase your preferred and diffuse terpenes individually (without cannabis) to lower any risk.
  • Consuming terpene-rich cannabis strains can have aromatherapeutic effects because of the potency of the scents involved. Studies have shown that these smells—just from smoking or simply sniffing a bud—can trigger your endocannabinoid system and provide various benefits [7].
  • Utilize THC-or-CBD-based bath balms and salts rich in the relaxing terpenes we’ve discussed. This way, you’ll enjoy the relaxing scents and the hot water that soothes your aches and sends you to a place of the utmost bliss.

Recommended Strains And Products

Primarily, if you want to blend your cannabis with aromatherapy, it starts with finding strains rich in the terpenes we’ve discussed. For instance, Stash’s Lemon Triangle Kush is a highly relaxing, therapeutic strain, and it’s no coincidence that it’s rich in limonene. Moreover, it’s an uplifting strain—so it doesn’t just make you groggy.

Another of our strains, Gorilla’d Cheese, is packed with beta-myrcene and linalool. Unsurprisingly, it offers stress relief and mood elevation.

It’s then worth noting that our terpene-rich offerings go beyond cannabis flower.  For instance, our Paradise Resin Jelly is packed with myrcene and limonene and boasts uplifting and pain-relieving properties.

We also have THC-based topical products, like our Lavender Epsom Salt Soak. Simply pour it into your bath and feel your pain melt away.

Cultivating A Relaxing Environment For Cannabis-Infused Aromatherapy

Here’s a breakdown of the components you should harness to ensure the optimal environment for cannabis-infused aromatherapy:

Optimizing Sensory Details

  • Make sure to incorporate soft lighting (e.g., string lights or dimmable table lamps) to establish a relaxing and therapeutic ambiance.
  • Hunt down a playlist of soothing music or ambient sounds, like instrumental scores, lo-fi jazz, nature sounds, or white noise.
  • Incorporate pillows, throw rugs, plush blankets, and other comforting textures.
  • Pair your cannabis/terpene scents with other calming aromas, such as lavender, chamomile, or other essential oils.

Responsible Cannabis Consumption

  • Be intentional about dosing your cannabis. Start low and build up as you determine the best dosage for you.
  • Focus on your emotions, bodily sensations, and breathing to be present in the moment.
  • Write a journal or use meditative techniques to process your thoughts and feelings.

Make Your Relaxation Holistic

  • Find a quiet space and turn off smartphone notifications to eliminate distractions.
  • Drink herbal teas and have water on hand to remain refreshed and hydrated.
  • Use deep breathing techniques to keep yourself grounded.

Best Cannabis Products for Fall

Fall is in the air, and that’s a wonderful thing.

So breathe it in and enjoy—this is a special time of year when the weather is a crisp respite from the dog days of summer, but it’s far from too cold like it’ll be in January.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are on the horizon, and everyone’s immersed in the majesty of the foliage, transforming into multicolored feasts for the eyes. Everything smells different, organic, sweet, and earthier than the rest of the year, and everybody seems refreshed because of those splendid scents.

Throughout all of commerce, seasonal shifts occur. We see fall fashions, for instance. Goodbye shorts and tees, and hello stylish jackets and snazzy pants.

Signature fall flavors and aromas align with our article but go beyond the cannabis scope. Maple, cinnamon, ginger, apple—and the list goes on—all appear in grocery store aisles and restaurant menus.

Oh, and don’t let us forget our old friend, the pumpkin-spice latte. The first sign of autumn is when everybody’s favorite hot beverages are out in full force at your local cafe.

You might now be wondering what a cannabis dispensary has to do with seasonal products. Isn’t every time of year a good time for Mary Jane? Won’t she forever warm the cockles of our hearts?

Yes—of course. Cannabis is excellent for all seasons, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enhance it through seasonal specificity.

In this article, we’ll examine how to get the most out of your autumn in 2024 with cannabis strains that suit the season.

Matching Terpenes To The Season

As cannabis enthusiasts get more familiar with the magical plant amid its widespread legalization for adult use and sales, they’re learning more about its components. We’re discovering the nuances of cannabis and the unique characteristics that add to the traits and qualities of given strains.

Terpenes are part and parcel of the above notion, present in most vegetation, and a significant aromatherapy component.

In cannabis, terpenes are responsible for the flavors and aromas of a given strain and are a driving factor in choosing seasonal cannabis. They’re also a crucial element of the entourage effect—the idea that the quality of strains goes beyond their potency and THC levels but involves all present components in the plant.

Below, we’ll list and provide a brief explanation of terpenes prevalent in strains most associated with the autumn [1]:

  • Limonene is synonymous with notes of citrus zest. It is believed to improve mood, offset stress, and provide energy bursts when the days get grey and chilly.
  • Myrcene’s trademark musky and earthy scents make it ideal for the autumn, as does its association with sedation and relaxation. Strains rich in myrcene fit splendidly with cozy fall evenings.
  • Caryophyllene’s anti-inflammatory properties help with joint pain brought forth by the cool fall weather, and its peppery, spicy scents jive with the crisp autumn vibes.

Here are the therapeutic effects present in most autumn-aligning cannabis strains:

  • We have already seen that myrcene and limonene have relaxation and stress-relieving properties, but so does linalool. These will help calm you down during a potentially stressful time of year, especially as the holiday season nears.
  • Pinene, like limonene, helps elevate mood and is often found in fall strains. Such terpenes can potentially enhance your sense of well-being as the days get darker and greyer.
  • Similar to caryophyllene, myrcene is also associated with pain and stiffness relief, which can prove crucial in the fall when temperatures are cooler [2].

Fall-Specific Cannabis Strains

Here are our top three fall-specific strains at Stash Dispensary:

Bio Jesus

This splendid fall strain has several of the characteristics we discussed in the previous section, including its terpene content—it’s rich in pinene and caryophyllene. While the intense diesel scent hits hard, it’s offset by earthy notes and leaves our customers feeling relaxed and hungry (maybe for some pumpkin pie!). This potent indica has almost 30% THC and really packs a punch, lending itself to cozy autumn evenings when it’s nearly time to tuck yourself in.

Lemon Bean

The citrusy notes of Lemon Bean spell “autumn” and add a potent punch to this highly stimulating sativa, which will leave you feeling focused, creative, and ready to take on the day. Furthermore, this strain (boasting almost 28% THC) won 2nd place in the 2021 Illinois High Times Cannabis Cup, speaking to its overall quality and the splendid experiences it yields.

Autumn lends itself to creativity because of the smells in the air and the colors of the leaves. Similarly, Lemon Bean—rich in myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene—will leave you wanting to draw, write, or do whatever other artistic endeavor speaks to you.

Bitter Orange

Bitter Orange is a hybrid strain with 29.08% THC, meaning it can all but knock your socks off when you consume it. However, there’s more to it than being highly potent. This strain is picked seasonally at the peak of freshness, meaning it’s ripe for the fall and all its splendor.

You’ll get the most out of Bitter Orange on grey autumn days when you hit your afternoon slump and need a burst of colors in your life. Indeed, this strain lives up to its standing as premium flower and is a favorite of many of our customers.

Other Fall-Themed Cannabis Products

Fall-themed cannabis products aren’t solely limited to cannabis flower.

For one, fall is so much about flavors, and what says flavors more than cannabis edibles?

Take our Cinnamon Toast Munch cereal bar.

In and of itself, cinnamon SCREAMS autumn flavors and gets you in the mood, filling you with warm feelings that mesh seamlessly with the crisp weather and beautiful surroundings.

This edible cereal bar combines Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal squares with soft, delectable marshmallows that’ll make your mouth water with every bite. Be careful, though. Each bar possesses 100mg of THC, so one or two bites should do you just fine before you pack it away for later.

There’s also our Sherb Cream Pie disposable vape pen, filled with a hybrid strain boasting nearly 80% THC. Its cinnamon flavors are most relevant to the fall theme, further bolstered by its cream candy aromas.

Combine Your Fall-Themed Cannabis With The Right Activity

Are you indulging in a fall-themed sativa? Then, maybe it’s time to hit up a cafe, sip on a pumpkin spice latte, write poetry, or sketch a drawing. Another option is going on a hike or apple-picking in an orchard and fueling yourself with a spritely sativa.

Or, you could enjoy a quality hybrid that evens you out and helps you focus on a captivating page-turning novel during a cozy autumn night in bed.

Another option is puffing on a powerful indica that knocks your socks off after a long day at the office. Follow it up with meditation, maybe on your front porch or in the yard to enjoy the crisp autumn air, and then get some shut-eye when you’re finished.

Autumn And Cannabis Are A Winning Combination

Cannabis shares a specific similarity with fashions, food items, and other products—you can base your purchase on seasonal change.

Is it necessary to buy seasonal cannabis? No, but it’s fun. It’s another way to engage with your cannabis and get the most from your experiences.

So, why not experiment with seasonally aligned strains and other cannabis products?

Whether you want to purchase something more fitting for autumn or stick with a tried-and-true favorite, Stash Dispensary has top-tier products that’ll satisfy your needs…and then some. Visit our menu today!

The Best Post-Workout Recovery Secret: Cannabis?

Whether you’re clanging and banging heavy weights, blistering your way through circuit training, knocking out some reps to keep the blood flowing, or doing any other workout, soreness will typically follow.

It’s the nature of the beast.

Even if you’re “taking it easy,” you’ll be that extra bit sore compared to if you did nothing at all.

Then, there’s your heavy workouts. Keep in mind, we’re not strictly speaking to hulking beasts deadlifting 800 pounds. We’re referring to your version of a heavy workout—whatever that might be. Thus, your max bench press could be 350 pounds or 30 pounds, and the following notion still applies:

No amount of stretching or post-workout massages can offset the soreness from rigorous and demanding exercise. Maybe you partake in yoga or pilates to make yourself more limber—it doesn’t matter.

Soreness is a fact of life when you exert yourself in any way, especially as you creep past 25 years old.

Don’t get us wrong—we’re all for proactive measures like stretching, yoga, massage, chiropractors, etc. You’ve got to do everything possible to ensure you’re comfortable and moving at your best. You’ll maintain some soreness, sure, but the extra things you do will offset your discomfort, if not entirely.

On the subject of “extra things” you can do to offset muscle soreness after workouts—where does cannabis stand in the conversation?

Cannabis has long been linked with pain-reduction properties. It only makes sense that it could play a significant role in your post-workout routine.

Cannabis For Exercise-Related Soreness: A Go-To Method For Athletes

Back in 2015, Bleacher Report published an article on cannabis usage among NFL players.

Nine years ago, legal cannabis didn’t flow as freely throughout the US as it does now, and it was banned in the league (and still is, for that matter).

However, the report we’re citing found that players would risk suspension to consume cannabis to offset the severe soreness they experienced after games [1].

The above evidence we’ve presented makes our entire case—at least the bulk of it.

These tremendous athletes who’ve worked their whole lives to be in the NFL were (and still are) willing to risk losing millions of dollars due to potential suspensions. Why? Because cannabis was (and still is) the best way for them to mitigate and manage the punishment absorbed during a pro football career.

Doesn’t that tell you everything you need to know about cannabis’s ability to manage muscle soreness after your workouts?

Also, Kansas City Chief’s receiver (and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend) Travis Kelce believes that nearly 80% of the league uses cannabis these days [2]

It’s not only the NFL’s athletes relying on cannabis for pain and soreness relief, either. A 2019 survey of 1,200 athletes across a range of sports found that 61% of the respondents used cannabis to offset pain [3]

In a lot of these instances, we’re referring to high-performance athletes dealing with severe pain after (or during) punishing careers. Cannabis presents these individuals suffering from otherwise chronic agony with a welcome alternative to damaging and addictive opioids.

We’ll admit that severe chronic pain from bruising athletic careers does equate to post-workout soreness.

That said, the same logic applies. The best athletes in the world benefit from cannabis’s pain-relieving properties, so why can’t you after your workouts?

How Can Cannabis Help With Muscle Soreness After Workouts?

Doctors have prescribed cannabis for pain relief since ancient times [4].

We’re willing to bet those ancient physicians attributed cannabis’s healing capabilities to sorcery and witchcraft.

Fortunately, we know better these days. The science is readily available to us, and we know that sorcery and witchcraft only have a little bit to do with cannabis’s pain-reducing properties (we’re kidding!).

Joking aside, cannabis’s pain-relieving traits stem from THC emulating the naturally occurring cannabinoid chemicals in our bodies. When you dose THC, you trigger your brain’s cannabinoid receptors, reducing pain because it activates your brain’s reward system [5].

We’ll add that we’re not healthcare professionals or fitness scientists at Stash.

All we’re doing is citing existing research. But you must use your better judgment when incorporating cannabis into your life for any healing or therapeutic reasons. Your best bet is always to discuss your choices with physicians or other relevant professionals.

How Can Cannabis Impact Your Workout Performance?

We’d understand if you were concerned about the act of smoking cannabis and how it may impact your performance in your chosen form of exercise. Cardiovascular-driven workouts seem like they wouldn’t be entirely synergistic with inhaling cannabis smoke.

Yet, reports show that many runners actually enjoy their workouts more after smoking cannabis [6]. While that’s not the same as recovery, one can assume the runners in question are comfortable with cannabis’s effects on their lungs and cardiovascular abilities if they’re toking up before a run.

Furthermore, one research paper about cannabis usage amongst female athletes discovered zero differences in heart function, body composition, and strength between cannabis users and nonusers [7].

Using Cannabis To Your Advantage For Workout Recovery

Cannabis’s pain-relieving properties have been the primary focus of this article until this point—but that’s not the only way it can help with your post-workout recovery.

The munchies (cannabis’s undeniable ability to bolster one’s appetite) can be a huge advantage after challenging workout sessions. Food is crucial to recovery after exercise, as it replaces carbohydrates and provides proteins to help build and repair muscles [8].

Particularly challenging aerobic workouts can diminish one’s appetite [9]. So, smoking cannabis to spark your appetite could prove itself an ideal countermeasure that helps you recover faster and more efficiently.

Choosing The Best Cannabis For Workout Recovery

Not all cannabis is created equal, meaning that more specific strains will be better suited to post-workout recovery, depending on your goals. Factors like cannabinoid content, strain type, and terpenes will dictate how effective a given cannabis product will be in helping you achieve your post-workout goals.

Fortunately, Stash Dispensaries has a wide range of cannabis products—all of high quality—to help you discover which strain best suits your post-workout recovery needs.

Why Do Edibles Hit Me Differently Than Smoking?

Dosing edibles sometimes seems like as much of a sweet science as boxing. Similarly, taking too many can feel like you’ve just duked it out for ten rounds with a prime George Foreman.

It’s not only taking too many edibles that can steer you wrong—many people don’t dose enough to feel the effects (and the related benefits).

We’re not speaking out against edibles here. Quite the opposite, in fact. We love edibles because the correct dose taken at the appropriate time can lead to a once-in-a-lifetime experience that expands your mind and opens you to new worlds.

Nonetheless, edible dosages take time to perfect; even once you’ve mastered them, you must manage the amount you take based on your growing tolerance.

Conversely, smoking cannabis is relatively simple, and the related effects are less enduring.

Below, we’ll delve into the differences between the effects of edibles and smoking and why both are so different.

Differences Between Eating And Smoking Cannabis

Outside of the manners of dosing being entirely different (the acts of eating an edible versus smoking a joint, blunt, or bong), the immediate effects of smoking and eating cannabis diverge drastically.

The bodily sensations in and of themselves are unique. Smoking affects your lungs, and the act of inhaling cannabis brings with it pleasures and sensations that can never be equaled by eating.

Alternatively, eating offers unique tactile experiences. Gnashing on cannabis-infused food brings tastes and flavors vastly different from what you’d pull from a spliff, blunt, bong, or pipe.

In recent years, edible-makers have fine-tuned recipes to improve the taste of cannabis-infused eats.

Still, many cannabis veterans will tell you the taste of cannabis is better off inhaled as smoke or vapor than eaten as food. At the same time, edibles are an ideal option for those who don’t like what smoke inhalation does to their lungs.

The next crucial difference between smoking and eating cannabis is the immediate aftermath.

You are almost immediately inebriated after smoking.

There’s not much of a waiting period—maybe a few minutes at most, but the delayed onset of inebriation isn’t much of a factor.

Depending on how much you smoke or how potent the strain is, the high can be adventurous or even discomforting (if you overdo it), but it’s relatively mild. At most, you’ll feel the most intense effects for an hour or maybe a bit longer—but a more negative experience won’t linger.

On the other hand, edibles take a long time to hit. In the immediate aftermath, you must sit and wait for the effects to take hold. This period can last anywhere between thirty minutes and two hours [1].

An edible high comes in waves—so while you could start feeling the effects relatively quickly, the apex of your high could come around four hours after you dosed.

The effects of edibles can last up to twelve hours but typically top out at around six if you properly modulate your dosage—that’s why many people take edibles for sleep [2]

Also, the high from edibles is often much more intense and discombobulating than the high from smoking. Below, we’ll delve into why:

What Makes Edibles So Different From Smoking Cannabis?

We won’t lie—some people don’t respond to edibles.

We’re unsure why, but they’ll eat some gummies and go on and on about how it didn’t do anything to them. It’s hard to say whether it’s a phenomenon or if they didn’t eat enough. Perhaps the edibles they’re eating aren’t well-made or potent.

In our experience, people who claim edibles don’t do anything to them eventually meet their maker.

They find the right edible, take the appropriate dose, and soar higher in the skies than ever before.

The individuals we’ve described above are outliers. Most people come to realize the power-punch of edibles during their first experience.

Edibles hit so hard because your liver processes edibles and produces 11-Hydroxy metabolite—five times more psychoactively potent than THC [3]. This metabolite then travels to your bloodstream and brain.

The principle is decidedly uncomplicated when you break it down to its basest elements. When you smoke cannabis, it’s not solid—it’s an impermanent vapor that intertwines with your lungs. Naturally, the effects are fleeting.

With edibles, you digest them as you would any meal. They’re also solid, robust pieces of food that you must break down, digest, and metabolize. You’re absorbing edibles into your body, where they stick around, marinate, and get to know you.

Necessary Precautions With Edibles

Responsible cannabis consumption applies to both edibles and smoking.

While smoking is far less potent than edibles, that doesn’t mean a joint, bong, or blunt can’t knock the stuffing out of you.

Still, edible dosages require even more caution than smoking. The best practice is to start low to gauge your tolerance and adjust accordingly.

The universal suggestion for beginner dosages is nothing over 5mg of THC—and that’s for seasoned smokers. Those who don’t smoke much but want to experiment with edibles should start even lower, at around 2.5mg.

You might hear about people eating 100mg at once, but such a fearsome tolerance builds incrementally over a long period.

Even then, experienced edible enthusiasts typically don’t go above 30 to 50mg—and that’s pushing it.

The suggested maximum dosage is 10mg; we recommend not exceeding this amount. Pushing further can be very uncomfortable unless you’re well-practiced and have fine-tuned your tolerance over the long term.

Are Edibles Legal In Illinois?

Yes—recreational edibles are legal in Illinois for adults 21 and over.

Anyone 21-plus can carry cannabis products (including edibles) infused with up to 500mg of THC [4].

This distinction is crucial because many states that have legalized recreational cannabis flower for adults haven’t legalized edibles.

Thus, anybody traveling out of state should leave their edibles behind—and then act according to the cannabis laws that apply to wherever you visit.

Integrating Cannabis into Your Relaxation Routine

Consider this: The average American works 2012.4 hours each year. It’s no wonder work-life balance has become such a hot-button issue over the past decade.

We’re not against the idea of hard work or a can-do attitude. After all, Stash is a proud employer of many talented employees, and we’re happy to contribute to their livelihood as much as they’re pleased to contribute to our dispensary’s success.

All the same, we wouldn’t want our team to make their entire lives about work.

Also, work is not the only aspect of one’s life that can be demanding or stressful. We all have personal responsibilities outside our professional lives that weigh on us, even if we’re up to the challenge.

Thus, finding time to relax is crucial to your overall quality of life. Through relaxation, you’ll enjoy immeasurable health benefits and garner an appreciation for the small things in life.

The Unavoidable Marriage Between Cannabis And Relaxation

The connection between cannabis and relaxation is a complex one.

Many people who don’t consume cannabis think it’s automatic that cannabis melts you into a couch, unable to do anything other than eat potato chips, watch television, and then pass out.

Any cannabis enthusiast knows that the above characterization is reductive—because it ignores recreational cannabis’s broad spectrum of experiences, moods, and sensations.

More to the point, not all strains and consumption methods are conducive to relaxation.

Let’s say you’re an experienced cannabis enthusiast, and you consume a high (but responsible) dose of edibles. Given your veteran status and understanding of your body, you’ll be fine—but would the effects be considered relaxing? Most often, not. Yes—it’ll be fun. A wild ride. But you’ll have difficulty achieving a soothing calm until you start to come down back to earth.

Additionally, taking a massive hit from a dab rig or burning through an entire bowl in one bong hit typically won’t offer you relaxation.

That said, many people have differing definitions of relaxation. Still, we’ll always suggest to air on the side of caution. While more experienced cannabis pros might yield joy and a sense of “relaxation” from the chaos of higher doses, like any good meat dish, low and slow is your best bet with any indica, sativa, or hybrid.

With this low and slow mentality, and through mindfully controlling the amounts you consume, cannabis will provide fulfilling and relaxing effects that bolster your other relaxation rituals.

First Things First: How Do You Relax?

A problem with many relaxation advice blogs is their assumption that everybody relaxes the same way.

Yes, tea can be very relaxing—when you like it. Nevertheless, not everyone finds much enjoyment in sitting down with a cup of Earl Grey, chai, etc.

What about listening to music? Does “relaxing” mean you only listen to ambient and meditative music? Maybe your definition of relaxation is listening to Ice Cube and Dr. Dre spit aggressive gangster rap lyrics.

Similarly, you could find relaxation in playing sports or through other forms of exercise due to these pursuits’ underlying, meditative aspects.

Speaking of meditative—we could suggest incorporating meditation into your relaxation routine and throwing in some cannabis. But what if you have no interest in meditation?

Our point is that there are a thousand different ways people relax. As much as more stereotypical forms of relaxation, like a massage or a spa treatment, can offset stress, so can boxing for twelve rounds against a stationary punching bag.

Ask yourself what kind of relaxer you are. Do you prefer more traditional approaches to relaxation, where you could easily fall asleep? Or, are you more experiential, and do you glean relaxation from losing yourself into more active pursuits?

The answers to these questions will dictate the type of cannabis that aligns with the methods of relaxation you most enjoy.

Sativas, Indicas, Hybrids, And Your Relaxation

Most cannabis veterans know the distinction between sativa, indica, and hybrid strains. If you’re new to the world of cannabis, here are some standard rules to guide your purchasing:

  • Sativas are typically more “active” or “busy” strains. Many people refer to these strains as “daytime” cannabis because of their links with productivity.
  • Indica strains are more associated with couch lock and sleep. Not all indicas pack a superpower punch, but they’ll make you drowsier than your average sativa.
  • Hybrids combine indica and sativa strains and can lean heavier one way or the other. The idea is to balance out the effects so you don’t feel too energized or too tired.

Incorporating cannabis into your relaxation rituals means matching the strains with your approach to relaxation.

Provided your approach to relaxation is more adventurous, involving things like hiking, going to concerts, or hitting up the local tavern, a sativa—or a sativa-dominant hybrid—might be your best bet.

Say you’re more into couch-related relaxation, where you aim to shut off your brain. In this instance, go heavy on the indica. For example, if you’re big on napping for relaxation, purchase the heaviest indica you can find and let it lull you into a peaceful slumber.

Cannabis selection can get complicated when you want to engage with media for relaxation, such as watching a movie.

First, the ideal cannabis would have to depend on the film you’re watching. Something you’ve seen a million times doesn’t necessarily demand specificity. However, a new movie that demands focus calls for you to be more particular about strains and even how you consume the cannabis.

Don’t be afraid to speak with your budtender about combining cannabis with your relaxation rituals. Dispensary staff keenly understand cannabinoid profiles and can make insightful recommendations based on their expert knowledge.

Flavor Versus Potency: Finding Your Perfect Balance

The modern-day cannabis experience—where states like Illinois have legalized adult recreational sales and usage—is about more than “getting stoned.”

More to the point, cannabis is many different things to different people.

To some, it adds a little excitement to their lives.

After all, even if legalized, our old pal Maryjane remains slightly rebellious. Maybe it’s because of its inebriating, psychoactive qualities that makes us feel like we’re breaking the rules, even when we aren’t.

On the other end of the spectrum, other enthusiasts don’t find indulging in cannabis rebellious or exciting at all. For them, consuming their favorite indica, sativa, or hybrid is all about mellowing out and relaxing, throwing on their favorite tunes and movies, or engaging in artistic pursuits.

These are merely examples of how you might partake in legal, adult-use cannabis.

Really, as long as you aren’t getting behind the wheel or doing anything reckless that puts you or others at risk, cannabis can be anything you want it to be. No matter your proclivities, there’s bound to be a strain or type to suit your preferences.

Included in this new era of cannabis consumers is the connoisseur who appreciates the many nuances of a given strain.

While many enthusiasts are happy to indulge in whatever smacks them hardest in the brain, others have more discerning tastes. They don’t simply demand heavy-hitting cannabis—they want strains that please their senses, from their nose to their tongues.

Thus, flavor is an increasingly significant aspect of the cannabis experience for many lovers of the magical plant.

It’s then worth asking—does improved flavor mean you sacrifice potency?

What Tastes Good Will Make You Feel Good

One could make the argument that bad-tasting cannabis will ruin the experience conjured by even the most potent but foul-flavored strain.

Imagine spending the bulk of your high trying to get rid of the bad taste in your mouth. It doesn’t sound like a good time to us.

Of course, we’re neglecting all the ways you could offset that flavor, whether through a drink, treat, or spearmint gum.

Still, should you have to suffer through cannabis that tastes putrid just to enjoy a potent high? We’d say no, you shouldn’t—especially when there is so much good-tasting cannabis out there with high potency.

Also, when cannabis offers robust, pleasant flavors, it adds to the overall experience.

You garner a further appreciation for the plant, which enriches your mind and expands your perspective. You become more active in your cannabis usage instead of passively smoking and letting whatever happens happen.

Not that there’s anything wrong with passive enjoyment of cannabis—but we vigorously promote garnering more from your experiences with the storied plant.

Flavor And The Entourage Effect

Not all potent cannabis tastes good, but we’d argue that a sign of high-quality cannabis is an appealing, noteworthy taste.

When cannabis tastes good to smoke, it’s usually a sign it’s cultivated with care and by thoughtful growers who make exceptional products.

Moreover, a strain’s flavor typically derives from the present terpenes, a significant component of the entourage effect.

The entourage effect is an increasingly accepted notion in cannabis circles that dictates all components within a given strain dictate its quality. Factors such as the present terpenes—and the flavors and aromas they yield—and other cannabinoids (e.g., CBD or CBN) are as crucial to cannabis as THC levels (aka, potency).

Other cannabinoids and terpenes, when harnessed with care, maximize a strain’s potency while offsetting the potentially unpleasant effects of a powerful, psychoactive response.

A Matter Of Taste

There is something of a caveat to the previous section. A lot of potent cannabis that effectively harnesses its cannabinoids and terpenes typically has a strong flavor.

Now, we’ll point out that these intense flavors are absolutely delicious to many cannabis lovers, especially if there’s nuance along with the potent punch.

However, not everybody loves it when the taste of their cannabis is so robust—it can be overpowering to certain pallets.

Fortunately, there’s a way to bridge the gap between lighter flavors and higher potencies.

With cannabis more widely available and understood these days, cultivators have the freedom to create strains that satisfy bespoke needs.

So, think about cannabis as you would wine.

Some more expensive, sought-after wines will possess more unctuous flavors, while others will be more easily drinkable. The bottles might cost the same and be similarly rated amongst oenophiles, but they provide vastly different experiences. And, guess what—both hypothetical wines would very likely have similar alcohol content, offering a similarly “clean” buzz.

Cannabis—these days—is no different.

Various strains will have terpene and cannabis content conducive to fuller flavors on the tongue, while others will have crisper, gentler “ingredients.” And these two contrasting hypothetical strains could very well have similar THC content and potencies.

The Top Tasting Terpenes

Here are some of the top-tasting terpenes that often pair with high-potency cannabis:

  • Myrcene is known for its fruity notes and is present in our 30.04% THC Gas Station Sushi sativa.
  • Limonene—as its name suggests—offers a zesty, citrus taste and aroma and is present in our whopping 47.2% THC Rainbows & Cherries sativa.
  • Caryophyllene features a spicy kick, and you’ll enjoy its rich flavors in our 34.97% THC Carolina Honey indica.

Best Cannabinoids for Sleep

Sleep – the most blissful escape from reality! And yet, for many of us, a good night’s rest is just a dream. Insomnia and other sleep disorders like sleep apnea affect over 50 million Americans each year. [1]

Tossing, turning, and staring at the ceiling night after night can leave you exhausted. Sleep is essential to maintain a good quality of life, but quality sleep remains elusive. [2]

The good news is cannabis may help overcome some chronic sleep disorders. Compounds in cannabis called cannabinoids can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety to help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.[3]

In this article, we’ll explore how cannabis affects sleep and which cannabinoids show the most promise for improving sleep quality.

Can Cannabis Help With Sleep?

The short answer: yes. But don’t just take our word for it – science has got our back! Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that;

“THC acts on the CB1 receptors in the central nervous system and can yield a biphasic effect on sleep such that THC, at lower doses, can reduce sleep onset latency and has been associated with greater ease of falling asleep, increased slow-wave sleep and increased total sleep time.” [4]

In English, please? THC, one of the main cannabinoids in cannabis flowers, can make it easier to fall asleep, increase deep sleep, and help you catch more zzz’s overall. First off, it can help calm those anxious thoughts that keep your mind racing when your head hits the pillow. No more counting sheep – just count on cannabis!

Plus, once you do drift off, cannabis may improve the quality of your sleep by increasing the amount of time you spend in deep, restorative slumber.

Other cannabinoids like CBD and CBN also hold promise for improving sleep by tackling factors that can disrupt it. To understand how they work, let’s first examine what cannabinoids actually are. [5]

What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis plants that interact with receptors in the human endocannabinoid system. They mimic compounds our own bodies produce to regulate essential functions like mood, appetite, pain, and sleep.

The two main types are phytocannabinoids found in plants and endocannabinoids produced in our bodies. Cannabis contains over 100 different phytocannabinoids capable of benefiting sleep, pain, mood, appetite, and more by interacting with the endocannabinoid system. [6]

Best Cannabinoids for Sleep

Keep in mind that most cannabis products contain a mix of these compounds, so you’ll likely experience a combination of effects. But that’s not a bad thing – in fact, it’s called the “entourage effect,” where cannabinoids work together synergistically.[7]

If you want to isolate which one is more beneficial for you, try different strains with higher concentrations of one or the other or try taking CBD or CBN products. Here’s a rundown of the best cannabinoids for sleep and how they may help:

THC

THC is the most famous cannabinoid, known for its psychoactive effects (a.k.a. getting you “high”). It’s also the most researched, and the findings are very encouraging when it comes to sleep. Research indicates THC helps sleep by directly relaxing the body to relieve tension and calming the mind to quiet racing thoughts. It allows users to fall asleep faster and experience longer, higher-quality sleep. [8]

CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the second-most popular compound. And it’s non-intoxicating. Although CBD does not induce drowsiness directly, studies show it can help sleep by easing anxiety. Its most recognized use is to relieve chronic pain and inflammation. When you think about it, these are issues that can keep people awake. It’s hard to sleep when your back or leg hurts. [9]

Perhaps some CBD could reduce that pain enough for the sufferer to rest comfortably. But CBD does more than that. For example, it also interacts with the serotonin system, which could improve mood and reduce anxiety – two major contributors to insomnia.

CBN

Cannabinol, or CBN, is a mildly intoxicating cannabinoid that emerges when THC ages and oxidizes. This lesser-known but no-less-exciting member of the cannabinoid has been studied less than the other two, but for a longer time. According to the Sleep Foundation, CBN might have the potential to make you feel sleepy, particularly when combined with THC (remember that entourage effect we talked about?) [10]

Cannabis for Sleep: Best Practices

To use cannabis most effectively as a sleep aid:

Start Low, Go Slow with Dosage

When it comes to cannabis, more isn’t always better. Taking too much can actually have the opposite effect and make you feel anxious or wired. Start with a low dose and gradually increase until you find your sweet spot.

Time it Right

Give yourself some time to unwind before hitting the hay. Those initial psychoactive effects might have you giggling more than yawning, so plan accordingly!

Consider the Method

Different methods of consuming cannabis can impact how quickly you feel the effects and how long they last. Vaping tends to have a faster onset but shorter duration, while edibles may take longer to kick in but stick around for the long haul. Find what works best for your sleep schedule.

Monitor Side Effects

While cannabis can be a helpful sleep aid, it’s not without some potential drawbacks. Some users report changes in their dreams (or lack thereof). Others may experience dry mouth, red eyes, or increased heart rate. And if you overdo it, you might wake up feeling groggy – aka the “cannabis hangover.” Listen to your body and adjust as needed.

CBN vs CBG

Isn’t the cannabis plant fascinating? We all know it contains THC and CBD, but that barely scratches the surface. Cannabis is home to over 100 unique compounds called cannabinoids that work together in amazing ways.[1]

Now, you don’t have to memorize all one hundred of them to enjoy our cannabis menu, but it doesn’t hurt to expand your horizons beyond THC and CBD. Otherwise, that’s like only listening to the lead singers and ignoring the rest of the band!

Today, we highlight two unsung cannabinoid heroes who deserve some time in the spotlight: CBN and CBG. As your local cannabis experts, we’re here to keep you informed on all things cannabis.

Whether it’s to buy or just out of pure curiosity, here’s everything you need to know about CBN and CBG.

What is a Minor Cannabinoid?

The first thing to understand is that both CBN and CBG are minor cannabinoids. So, what exactly makes them “minor” cannabinoids? Well, one similarity they share is that they are both found in relatively tiny amounts in most cannabis strains. We’re talking less than 1% of the plant’s chemical composition. They get dwarfed by volume by the more abundant THC, CBD, and other major cannabinoids.

But don’t let their small numbers fool you! Minor cannabinoids can still have major impacts by interacting with our endocannabinoid system (ECS.) The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system that helps regulate essential functions like sleep, pain, immune response, and more. [2]

It does this through chemical messengers called cannabinoids binding to receptors

  • CB1, which is concentrated in the brain and central nervous system
  • And CB2 which is common throughout the body.

What is the Entourage Effect?

You might think that a minor cannabinoid with less than 1% volume in a strain would hardly make a difference. But the beauty of cannabis is that all of these cannabinoids work together in what’s known as the “entourage effect.” [3]

THC, CBD, CBN, CBG, terpenes, flavonoids – they all work in synergy to create an effect that’s greater than the sum of its parts. When that happens, the therapeutic benefits are more eminent than they would be if consuming each individually.

Now that we’ve addressed that, let’s examine CBG and then CBN in more detail.

CBG: The Mother of All Cannabinoids

Nicknamed the “mother” cannabinoid, CBG is essentially the chemical parent to other major cannabinoids. Its acidic precursor, CBGA, gets broken down by enzymes into THC, CBD, and other compounds as the cannabis plant matures. As CBG, it binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS. [4]

Like CBD, CBG causes no high or impairment by itself. Early research suggests it may share some similar therapeutic qualities as its more famous offspring.

CBG for Pain and Inflammation Relief

Pain and inflammation often go hand in hand. If you’re hurting, chances are something is inflamed. Research shows CBG has powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties.

For example, CBG may offer hope to those suffering from IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) like Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. A 2013 animal study found that CBG reduced gut inflammation, oxidative stress, and nitric oxide production in mice with IBD. [5]

Where to Find CBG

Since CBG is a minor cannabinoid, you probably won’t get a meaningful amount by smoking regular flowers. Your best bet is to seek out products that are specifically high in CBG, like tinctures, edibles, or concentrates.

CBN: The Sleepy Cannabinoid

If CBG is the mother of all cannabinoids, you could call CBN the sleepy granddaddy. The cannabis plant itself does not directly produce it. Instead, CBN is created when THC slowly oxidizes and degrades over time. Kind of like fine wine getting better with age! [6]

Now, although CBN has a weaker affinity for binding to CB1 receptors than THC, it can still be mildly psychoactive at very high levels. However, the amounts typically found in cannabis products induce relaxation and sleepiness rather than impairment.

Let’s explore some of CBN’s best-known benefits:

Promoting Sleep

Having trouble getting enough Zzz’s? You’re not alone. In fact, up to 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder. [7] CBN may help! Animal studies have shown it can prolong sleep time. One human trial found that combining THC and CBN increased sleep duration with fewer nighttime awakenings. [8] Sufferers of insomnia and other sleep disorders may find relief with CBN’s sedative effects.

CBN for Anxiety

For some folks with severe anxiety or PTSD, THC can be too intense and trigger panic attacks. CBN offers a less intense experience. [9] Its lighter affinity for CB1 receptors significantly reduces the chance of an unpleasant psychoactive reaction. The relaxing qualities may also lower anxiety levels for PTSD patients and others who struggle with stressful thoughts.

Where to Find CBN

As CBN gains popularity, keep an eye out for specialized CBN edibles, tinctures, and vape cartridges. Edibles with an equal ratio of THC to CBN are a great option if you’re looking for a stronger dose. Talk to our budtenders for the inside scoop on our freshest inventory!

Recap

At the end of the day, the cannabis plant is all about teamwork. Instead of pitting cannabinoids against each other, we should be strategizing how to get them collaborating harmoniously! So, it shouldn’t be CBG Vs. CBN, or CBD versus THC. Instead, we should look at how these compounds work together.

Both CBG and CBN may offer complementary effects to the major cannabinoids we already know and love. Here are some of their key similarities and differences:

Similarities

  • Minor Cannabinoids: Found in low levels (<1%) in most strains
  • Interact With ECS: Bind to CB receptors, causing therapeutic effect
  • Entourage Players: Enhance overall effects when combined
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Reduce inflammation in studies

Differences

  • Psychoactivity: CBN has slight; CBG has none
  • Applications: CBN aids sleep disorders; CBG tackles pain and infections

The band’s still playing…now it’s time to listen to the rhythm section for a change. Trust us, it makes all the difference.

Stop by Stash Dispensaries and tap into these fascinating fringe benefits with our CBN and CBG product offerings today!

Stash’s Summer Playlist

Before getting into our summer playlist, we should address the joint-sized elephant in the room. We’re an adult-use, recreational cannabis dispensary, not a DJ or music producer.

We’ve curated these suggestions with a ‘green lean’ meant to enhance your cannabis experience.

That said, cannabis enthusiasts run the gamut in personality types and musical tastes. Also, the summer calls for a particular kind of tune that harnesses optimal chill-out vibes.

Beyond that, you might be hanging out with a group of friends where several do not indulge in cannabis. Or, you might not want to indulge in cannabis every time you listen to music this summer.

While our playlist will veer toward the cannabis-centric music listener, we’ll do our best to ensure it’s well-rounded for all to enjoy this summer. Thus, some reefer-inspired classics will have their place, but so will more outside-the-box selections.

The Synergistic Relationship Between Cannabis And Music

Every cannabis experience has the chance to be a musical experience. The two go hand in hand.

According to neurological and musical experts, listening to a piece of music activates the entire range of our central nervous system. Our brains are physiologically “on fire” when stimulated by music, going into overload to digest and absorb rhythm, harmony, timbre, pitch, etc.

Similarly, the brain’s cannabinoid (CB1) receptors are prominent within the central nervous system, growing hyperactive under cannabis’s influence.

Cannabis and music both activate the brain’s pleasure and reward system. When THC leads to a substantial dopamine hit, it can yield a more positive listening experience.

When cannabis and music trigger the mesolimbic dopamine system simultaneously, it doubles down two pleasing behaviors, coupling them into one ear-melting experience.

Now, let’s get into our summer playlist picks, shall we?

Old School Selections

Here, we’ll start with a few old-school tracks to enhance the summer-time vibes and, in some instances, the cannabis-induced vibes.

Muddy Waters – Champagne And Reefer

Let us take you somewhere—where the barbecue smoke fills the air and cold, refreshing brewski eagerly awaits you in a portable cooler filled with ice. You’re with your closest pals on a patio on a hot day with hazy skies and the sun beating down.

Nothing quite says lay back, chill out, and enjoy a cold beer while toking on a pre-roll like Champagne and Reefer by Muddy Waters

This song personifies everything fans know and appreciate about one of America’s preeminent blues legends. Waters plays low-down, dirty blues that somehow make you feel warm and tingly as he moans his laments over laid-back rhythms and melodies.

Jimi Hendrix – Castles Made Of Sand

The easiest Jimi Hendrix pick is Purple Haze. Its connections to the cannabis world are cliche at this point—and for good reason—the song kicks all kinds of behind.

Still, we wanted to dare to be different by choosing another Hendrix banger—Castles Made of Sand. It’s a sad song that’s deeply contemplative and rich.

The guitar is played dream-like by the man wielding it, a master of his craft in Hendrix. This psychedelic tune lulls listeners into a euphoric daze, wistfully thinking of memories that fade away like castles made of sand falling into the sea.

Ella Fitzgerald (Or Sublime) – Summertime

The song’s place on our summer playlist is self-explanatory. Summertime—the song and the season—is the definition of a vibe. You can’t go wrong with this stone-cold classic, whether Ella Fitzgerald’s elegant, skillfully crooned iteration or Sublime’s trippy, kaleidoscopic cover

Hip Hop Selections

Here are our hip-hop selections for our readers who love scorching rhymes spat over piping-hot beats on a warm summer day.

Cypress Hill – High Times

As a cannabis dispensary, making a playlist without including Cypress Hill is equivalent to blasphemy.

The cannabis-activist rap group’s song, High Times, evokes a sense of nostalgia, bringing us back to the summer days of our youth and examining how far we’ve come. The beat is tight, and the lyrics are boisterously delivered with vim and vigor, like in all Cypress Hill tracks.

Run The Jewels – Close Your Eyes

Summertime is the time to get lit; all RTJ songs make the listener want to do just that. Close Your Eyes is no different, bolstered by stereotypically lively performances from the two MCs, Killer Mike and El-P.

A hot summer day might bring you down with oppressively scorching temperatures, but Close Your Eyes will wake you up with its bristling attitude. Never mind the surprising verse spit passionately by Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha, a celebrated hip-hop and rock legend.

Mary J Blige – Family Affair

The summer often means family or friend-group get-togethers at vacation homes to catch up.

Playing Mary J Blige’s Family Affair at your familial gathering will get everyone talking and—dare we say—shaking their behinds into the later hours of the night. That’s the type of family affair we want to attend this summer.

Contemporary Selections

Here, we’ll be more current with our selections, choosing two big-time bops from the past few years.

Dua Lipa – Levitating

Levitating by pop queen Dua Lipa has a bass that slaps, a hook that sticks, and a pulse that turns a ho-hum summer day into times you cherish forever.

The title itself, as well as some of the trippy musical nuances, will appeal to cannabis enthusiasts. At the same time, the tune’s pop leanings make it appealing to everyone—not just pot lovers.

Taylor Swift – Florida!!! (feat. Florence + The Machine)

We would be remiss not to include a Taylor Swift song from her Tortured Poets Department album, which is taking the nation by storm. The songs on the critically acclaimed album will ring through the streets throughout 2024’s warm months, and it’s something to embrace and lean into.

Florida!!!, the duet Taylor Swift does with Florence Welch, invokes a sense of summer through its title. After all, Florida is a state where it’s basically summer all year round. This track also speaks to our cannabis inclinations, with a poetic “weed” reference in the lyrics.

With our summer playlist suggestions, you can enjoy summer to the fullest extent. So, turn up the volume, spark up your favorite sativa or indica, and let the good times roll.
