Best Cannabinoids for Sleep

Sleep – the most blissful escape from reality! And yet, for many of us, a good night’s rest is just a dream. Insomnia and other sleep disorders like sleep apnea affect over 50 million Americans each year. [1]

Tossing, turning, and staring at the ceiling night after night can leave you exhausted. Sleep is essential to maintain a good quality of life, but quality sleep remains elusive. [2]

The good news is cannabis may help overcome some chronic sleep disorders. Compounds in cannabis called cannabinoids can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety to help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.[3]

In this article, we’ll explore how cannabis affects sleep and which cannabinoids show the most promise for improving sleep quality.

Can Cannabis Help With Sleep?

The short answer: yes. But don’t just take our word for it – science has got our back! Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that;

“THC acts on the CB1 receptors in the central nervous system and can yield a biphasic effect on sleep such that THC, at lower doses, can reduce sleep onset latency and has been associated with greater ease of falling asleep, increased slow-wave sleep and increased total sleep time.” [4]

In English, please? THC, one of the main cannabinoids in cannabis flowers, can make it easier to fall asleep, increase deep sleep, and help you catch more zzz’s overall. First off, it can help calm those anxious thoughts that keep your mind racing when your head hits the pillow. No more counting sheep – just count on cannabis!

Plus, once you do drift off, cannabis may improve the quality of your sleep by increasing the amount of time you spend in deep, restorative slumber.

Other cannabinoids like CBD and CBN also hold promise for improving sleep by tackling factors that can disrupt it. To understand how they work, let’s first examine what cannabinoids actually are. [5]

What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis plants that interact with receptors in the human endocannabinoid system. They mimic compounds our own bodies produce to regulate essential functions like mood, appetite, pain, and sleep.

The two main types are phytocannabinoids found in plants and endocannabinoids produced in our bodies. Cannabis contains over 100 different phytocannabinoids capable of benefiting sleep, pain, mood, appetite, and more by interacting with the endocannabinoid system. [6]

Best Cannabinoids for Sleep

Keep in mind that most cannabis products contain a mix of these compounds, so you’ll likely experience a combination of effects. But that’s not a bad thing – in fact, it’s called the “entourage effect,” where cannabinoids work together synergistically.[7]

If you want to isolate which one is more beneficial for you, try different strains with higher concentrations of one or the other or try taking CBD or CBN products. Here’s a rundown of the best cannabinoids for sleep and how they may help:

THC

THC is the most famous cannabinoid, known for its psychoactive effects (a.k.a. getting you “high”). It’s also the most researched, and the findings are very encouraging when it comes to sleep. Research indicates THC helps sleep by directly relaxing the body to relieve tension and calming the mind to quiet racing thoughts. It allows users to fall asleep faster and experience longer, higher-quality sleep. [8]

CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the second-most popular compound. And it’s non-intoxicating. Although CBD does not induce drowsiness directly, studies show it can help sleep by easing anxiety. Its most recognized use is to relieve chronic pain and inflammation. When you think about it, these are issues that can keep people awake. It’s hard to sleep when your back or leg hurts. [9]

Perhaps some CBD could reduce that pain enough for the sufferer to rest comfortably. But CBD does more than that. For example, it also interacts with the serotonin system, which could improve mood and reduce anxiety – two major contributors to insomnia.

CBN

Cannabinol, or CBN, is a mildly intoxicating cannabinoid that emerges when THC ages and oxidizes. This lesser-known but no-less-exciting member of the cannabinoid has been studied less than the other two, but for a longer time. According to the Sleep Foundation, CBN might have the potential to make you feel sleepy, particularly when combined with THC (remember that entourage effect we talked about?) [10]

Cannabis for Sleep: Best Practices

To use cannabis most effectively as a sleep aid:

Start Low, Go Slow with Dosage

When it comes to cannabis, more isn’t always better. Taking too much can actually have the opposite effect and make you feel anxious or wired. Start with a low dose and gradually increase until you find your sweet spot.

Time it Right

Give yourself some time to unwind before hitting the hay. Those initial psychoactive effects might have you giggling more than yawning, so plan accordingly!

Consider the Method

Different methods of consuming cannabis can impact how quickly you feel the effects and how long they last. Vaping tends to have a faster onset but shorter duration, while edibles may take longer to kick in but stick around for the long haul. Find what works best for your sleep schedule.

Monitor Side Effects

While cannabis can be a helpful sleep aid, it’s not without some potential drawbacks. Some users report changes in their dreams (or lack thereof). Others may experience dry mouth, red eyes, or increased heart rate. And if you overdo it, you might wake up feeling groggy – aka the “cannabis hangover.” Listen to your body and adjust as needed.

CBN vs CBG

Isn’t the cannabis plant fascinating? We all know it contains THC and CBD, but that barely scratches the surface. Cannabis is home to over 100 unique compounds called cannabinoids that work together in amazing ways.[1]

Now, you don’t have to memorize all one hundred of them to enjoy our cannabis menu, but it doesn’t hurt to expand your horizons beyond THC and CBD. Otherwise, that’s like only listening to the lead singers and ignoring the rest of the band!

Today, we highlight two unsung cannabinoid heroes who deserve some time in the spotlight: CBN and CBG. As your local cannabis experts, we’re here to keep you informed on all things cannabis.

Whether it’s to buy or just out of pure curiosity, here’s everything you need to know about CBN and CBG.

What is a Minor Cannabinoid?

The first thing to understand is that both CBN and CBG are minor cannabinoids. So, what exactly makes them “minor” cannabinoids? Well, one similarity they share is that they are both found in relatively tiny amounts in most cannabis strains. We’re talking less than 1% of the plant’s chemical composition. They get dwarfed by volume by the more abundant THC, CBD, and other major cannabinoids.

But don’t let their small numbers fool you! Minor cannabinoids can still have major impacts by interacting with our endocannabinoid system (ECS.) The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system that helps regulate essential functions like sleep, pain, immune response, and more. [2]

It does this through chemical messengers called cannabinoids binding to receptors

  • CB1, which is concentrated in the brain and central nervous system
  • And CB2 which is common throughout the body.

What is the Entourage Effect?

You might think that a minor cannabinoid with less than 1% volume in a strain would hardly make a difference. But the beauty of cannabis is that all of these cannabinoids work together in what’s known as the “entourage effect.” [3]

THC, CBD, CBN, CBG, terpenes, flavonoids – they all work in synergy to create an effect that’s greater than the sum of its parts. When that happens, the therapeutic benefits are more eminent than they would be if consuming each individually.

Now that we’ve addressed that, let’s examine CBG and then CBN in more detail.

CBG: The Mother of All Cannabinoids

Nicknamed the “mother” cannabinoid, CBG is essentially the chemical parent to other major cannabinoids. Its acidic precursor, CBGA, gets broken down by enzymes into THC, CBD, and other compounds as the cannabis plant matures. As CBG, it binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS. [4]

Like CBD, CBG causes no high or impairment by itself. Early research suggests it may share some similar therapeutic qualities as its more famous offspring.

CBG for Pain and Inflammation Relief

Pain and inflammation often go hand in hand. If you’re hurting, chances are something is inflamed. Research shows CBG has powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties.

For example, CBG may offer hope to those suffering from IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) like Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. A 2013 animal study found that CBG reduced gut inflammation, oxidative stress, and nitric oxide production in mice with IBD. [5]

Where to Find CBG

Since CBG is a minor cannabinoid, you probably won’t get a meaningful amount by smoking regular flowers. Your best bet is to seek out products that are specifically high in CBG, like tinctures, edibles, or concentrates.

CBN: The Sleepy Cannabinoid

If CBG is the mother of all cannabinoids, you could call CBN the sleepy granddaddy. The cannabis plant itself does not directly produce it. Instead, CBN is created when THC slowly oxidizes and degrades over time. Kind of like fine wine getting better with age! [6]

Now, although CBN has a weaker affinity for binding to CB1 receptors than THC, it can still be mildly psychoactive at very high levels. However, the amounts typically found in cannabis products induce relaxation and sleepiness rather than impairment.

Let’s explore some of CBN’s best-known benefits:

Promoting Sleep

Having trouble getting enough Zzz’s? You’re not alone. In fact, up to 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder. [7] CBN may help! Animal studies have shown it can prolong sleep time. One human trial found that combining THC and CBN increased sleep duration with fewer nighttime awakenings. [8] Sufferers of insomnia and other sleep disorders may find relief with CBN’s sedative effects.

CBN for Anxiety

For some folks with severe anxiety or PTSD, THC can be too intense and trigger panic attacks. CBN offers a less intense experience. [9] Its lighter affinity for CB1 receptors significantly reduces the chance of an unpleasant psychoactive reaction. The relaxing qualities may also lower anxiety levels for PTSD patients and others who struggle with stressful thoughts.

Where to Find CBN

As CBN gains popularity, keep an eye out for specialized CBN edibles, tinctures, and vape cartridges. Edibles with an equal ratio of THC to CBN are a great option if you’re looking for a stronger dose. Talk to our budtenders for the inside scoop on our freshest inventory!

Recap

At the end of the day, the cannabis plant is all about teamwork. Instead of pitting cannabinoids against each other, we should be strategizing how to get them collaborating harmoniously! So, it shouldn’t be CBG Vs. CBN, or CBD versus THC. Instead, we should look at how these compounds work together.

Both CBG and CBN may offer complementary effects to the major cannabinoids we already know and love. Here are some of their key similarities and differences:

Similarities

  • Minor Cannabinoids: Found in low levels (<1%) in most strains
  • Interact With ECS: Bind to CB receptors, causing therapeutic effect
  • Entourage Players: Enhance overall effects when combined
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Reduce inflammation in studies

Differences

  • Psychoactivity: CBN has slight; CBG has none
  • Applications: CBN aids sleep disorders; CBG tackles pain and infections

The band’s still playing…now it’s time to listen to the rhythm section for a change. Trust us, it makes all the difference.

Stop by Stash Dispensaries and tap into these fascinating fringe benefits with our CBN and CBG product offerings today!

Stash’s Summer Playlist

Before getting into our summer playlist, we should address the joint-sized elephant in the room. We’re an adult-use, recreational cannabis dispensary, not a DJ or music producer.

We’ve curated these suggestions with a ‘green lean’ meant to enhance your cannabis experience.

That said, cannabis enthusiasts run the gamut in personality types and musical tastes. Also, the summer calls for a particular kind of tune that harnesses optimal chill-out vibes.

Beyond that, you might be hanging out with a group of friends where several do not indulge in cannabis. Or, you might not want to indulge in cannabis every time you listen to music this summer.

While our playlist will veer toward the cannabis-centric music listener, we’ll do our best to ensure it’s well-rounded for all to enjoy this summer. Thus, some reefer-inspired classics will have their place, but so will more outside-the-box selections.

The Synergistic Relationship Between Cannabis And Music

Every cannabis experience has the chance to be a musical experience. The two go hand in hand.

According to neurological and musical experts, listening to a piece of music activates the entire range of our central nervous system. Our brains are physiologically “on fire” when stimulated by music, going into overload to digest and absorb rhythm, harmony, timbre, pitch, etc.

Similarly, the brain’s cannabinoid (CB1) receptors are prominent within the central nervous system, growing hyperactive under cannabis’s influence.

Cannabis and music both activate the brain’s pleasure and reward system. When THC leads to a substantial dopamine hit, it can yield a more positive listening experience.

When cannabis and music trigger the mesolimbic dopamine system simultaneously, it doubles down two pleasing behaviors, coupling them into one ear-melting experience.

Now, let’s get into our summer playlist picks, shall we?

Old School Selections

Here, we’ll start with a few old-school tracks to enhance the summer-time vibes and, in some instances, the cannabis-induced vibes.

Muddy Waters – Champagne And Reefer

Let us take you somewhere—where the barbecue smoke fills the air and cold, refreshing brewski eagerly awaits you in a portable cooler filled with ice. You’re with your closest pals on a patio on a hot day with hazy skies and the sun beating down.

Nothing quite says lay back, chill out, and enjoy a cold beer while toking on a pre-roll like Champagne and Reefer by Muddy Waters

This song personifies everything fans know and appreciate about one of America’s preeminent blues legends. Waters plays low-down, dirty blues that somehow make you feel warm and tingly as he moans his laments over laid-back rhythms and melodies.

Jimi Hendrix – Castles Made Of Sand

The easiest Jimi Hendrix pick is Purple Haze. Its connections to the cannabis world are cliche at this point—and for good reason—the song kicks all kinds of behind.

Still, we wanted to dare to be different by choosing another Hendrix banger—Castles Made of Sand. It’s a sad song that’s deeply contemplative and rich.

The guitar is played dream-like by the man wielding it, a master of his craft in Hendrix. This psychedelic tune lulls listeners into a euphoric daze, wistfully thinking of memories that fade away like castles made of sand falling into the sea.

Ella Fitzgerald (Or Sublime) – Summertime

The song’s place on our summer playlist is self-explanatory. Summertime—the song and the season—is the definition of a vibe. You can’t go wrong with this stone-cold classic, whether Ella Fitzgerald’s elegant, skillfully crooned iteration or Sublime’s trippy, kaleidoscopic cover

Hip Hop Selections

Here are our hip-hop selections for our readers who love scorching rhymes spat over piping-hot beats on a warm summer day.

Cypress Hill – High Times

As a cannabis dispensary, making a playlist without including Cypress Hill is equivalent to blasphemy.

The cannabis-activist rap group’s song, High Times, evokes a sense of nostalgia, bringing us back to the summer days of our youth and examining how far we’ve come. The beat is tight, and the lyrics are boisterously delivered with vim and vigor, like in all Cypress Hill tracks.

Run The Jewels – Close Your Eyes

Summertime is the time to get lit; all RTJ songs make the listener want to do just that. Close Your Eyes is no different, bolstered by stereotypically lively performances from the two MCs, Killer Mike and El-P.

A hot summer day might bring you down with oppressively scorching temperatures, but Close Your Eyes will wake you up with its bristling attitude. Never mind the surprising verse spit passionately by Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha, a celebrated hip-hop and rock legend.

Mary J Blige – Family Affair

The summer often means family or friend-group get-togethers at vacation homes to catch up.

Playing Mary J Blige’s Family Affair at your familial gathering will get everyone talking and—dare we say—shaking their behinds into the later hours of the night. That’s the type of family affair we want to attend this summer.

Contemporary Selections

Here, we’ll be more current with our selections, choosing two big-time bops from the past few years.

Dua Lipa – Levitating

Levitating by pop queen Dua Lipa has a bass that slaps, a hook that sticks, and a pulse that turns a ho-hum summer day into times you cherish forever.

The title itself, as well as some of the trippy musical nuances, will appeal to cannabis enthusiasts. At the same time, the tune’s pop leanings make it appealing to everyone—not just pot lovers.

Taylor Swift – Florida!!! (feat. Florence + The Machine)

We would be remiss not to include a Taylor Swift song from her Tortured Poets Department album, which is taking the nation by storm. The songs on the critically acclaimed album will ring through the streets throughout 2024’s warm months, and it’s something to embrace and lean into.

Florida!!!, the duet Taylor Swift does with Florence Welch, invokes a sense of summer through its title. After all, Florida is a state where it’s basically summer all year round. This track also speaks to our cannabis inclinations, with a poetic “weed” reference in the lyrics.

With our summer playlist suggestions, you can enjoy summer to the fullest extent. So, turn up the volume, spark up your favorite sativa or indica, and let the good times roll.

The History of 420

There are certain behaviors in life that we adopt without necessarily thinking about them.

Often, we learn these customs from our family, friends, or community and adopt them because they seamlessly ingrain into our value systems and ways of life.

This natural inclination to embrace traditions and customs is not limited to our personal lives. It extends to the public holidays we celebrate, each with its own unique rituals.

Take, for instance, Halloween.

When we’re younger, our elders, parents, guardians, etc., tell us to dress in crazy or scary costumes and roam the neighborhood for sweet treats. We don’t ask questions—we follow the candy, and when the time comes, we instill the same values into the next generation.

We can always learn more about these customs if we choose. Conversely, we could adhere without thinking beyond the communal buzz and the good times. That’s the beauty of them.

In the cannabis culture, our tradition—our ‘holiday,’ of sorts—is 420.

The beauty of 420 is much the same as that of other holidays. You can join in for the ride and have an absolute blast without digging deeper, or you can explore the more profound meanings of a day so synonymous with cannabis culture.

By probing into the story behind 420, cannabis enthusiasts can engage further with the culture and its meaningful roots, offering a more enriched, eye-opening experience.

Read on as we explore the story and meanings of 420, helping you further appreciate the number, day, and time of day we cannabis lovers call our own.

What Is 420?

The question of “what is 420?” is much like one of our terpene-rich, THC-infused pre-rolls—a loaded one.

420 is many things to many people. To some, it’s a mantra to indicate solidarity with all participants in cannabis culture. To others, the hallowed number reflects either a time of day or a date on the calendar, both associated with when cannabis lovers indulge in their famous plant.

In a sense, 4:20 p.m. is like tea time for adult-use recreational cannabis lovers (as long as it’s feasible to partake in a session without risking one’s job).

When 4:20 strikes on a weekend or day off, it’s time to turn on your favorite Mary Jane-inspired playlist on Spotify or fire up your favorite film on whatever streaming service has it. Then, all that’s required is to let the good times roll, whether alone or with your best pals.

There’s also April 20th, 4/20—the unofficial cannabis holiday.

On this particular day, all cannabis lovers unite and rejoice. Many take vacation days off work to attend movies, concerts, festivals, and restaurants or get together with their social circle at someone’s home, where they’ll inevitably partake in some reefer-induced fun.

What’s The History Of 420? And What Does 420 Mean?

Like many instances in American History, there are several versions of the truth regarding 420’s origins.

Some link 420’s beginnings to Bob Dylan’s ‘Rainy Day Women No. 12 & 35’ with its “Everybody must get stoned” hook. (Multiply 12 times 35, and you get 420.) Others believe 420 was a marijuana possession policy code.

However, the accepted story behind 420 has its roots in the 1970s at San Rafael High School, where a small collective of bell-bottomed rapscallions called “the Waldos” planted the seeds.

The California Marin County Waldos began using “420” when a group member’s brother was growing cannabis in the woods in close-by Point Reyes and had fears of getting caught. He drew the crew a map, giving the high schoolers the go-ahead to harvest the crop.

Funnily enough, this patch on the map became something of a Moby Dick for the group. They searched for it but never found it. However, it was a uniting force during the fall of 1971. After classes and football practice ended each day, the Waldos would gather by the school’s Louis Pasteur statue and smoke a joint before embarking on their fruitless expeditions.

What was the time of these hangout and burn-down sessions?

You guessed it: 4:20 p.m.

As high schoolers are wont to do, the Waldos adopted 420 into their language. At first, it was “420 Louie,” but they soon filtered it down to “420,” its basest elements.

The Waldos ran wild with 420, saving artifacts like postmarked letters from the 1970s with ample 420 references. They’ve kept these artifacts in a bank vault—and the Oxford Dictionary cited these documents as the earliest uses of 420 when it added the term in 2017.

How Did 420 Become So Iconic?

A brother of a Waldo was close friends with Phil Lesh, the bassist of the Grateful Dead. Thus, the Waldos became entrenched in the band’s social circle, introducing the Dead to 420, who adopted it as their own.

A couple of decades later, in the 90s, a reporter for High Times Magazine named Steve Bloom received a flier to convene at 4:20 p.m. on April 20th for 420-ing at the Bolinas Ridge sunset. The magazine published the flier, further bolstering its impact on the zeitgeist.

Fast-forward to today, and 420 is a total phenomenon. People who barely engage with cannabis culture know of 420 and its connotations.

Nevertheless, people have yet to learn how 420 became so iconic. It seems the instances we’ve discussed might explain some of it, but the sheer magnitude of the number remains a mystery—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing; some mystery adds to the magic.

How Can You Celebrate 4/20?

Since 420 is an unwritten holiday, the world is your oyster in how you wish to enjoy it. Nothing is defined or etched in stone.

We can tell you that you likely won’t have too hard of a time finding activities revolving around cannabis culture. The cannabis communities in all areas with legalized adult recreational usage continue to grow and thrive and will likely have an event cooking up.

Alternatively, hanging out with close friends and spending quality time together with cannabis as a uniting force is one of the best ways to celebrate 420.

Even though it might not be April 20th for another long while, it’s 4:20 p.m. every day, so don’t let the date on the calendar prevent you from celebrating.

And why not celebrate with Stash Dispensaries? Our menu of top-tier cannabis products will elevate your 420 experience.

Cannabis Terpenes: Bisabolol

The cannabis experience, at its core, can be likened to many forms of entertainment, sustenance, and even our most profound relationships.

There’s a uniting overlap, whether you’re watching a movie, eating an entree or snack, or getting to know somebody. Nuance and depth triumph all—one note won’t do.

The relationship we have with cannabis is much the same. Most cannabis enthusiasts want more than a one-note connection with the plant and the strains it yields.

Many people seek more than “getting high” and melting into their couch.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with smoking and melting into a puddle of relaxation, but that’s not all there is to cannabis.

For instance, indulging in a strain that heightens your senses and enhances your appreciation for life’s finer things is enriching and eye-opening. Another example is a strain that inspires creativity or gives you a burst of energy.

Then, there are flavors, aromas, and odors to consider. These traits all benefit the physical act of smoking or vaping, making it a more indulgent, satisfying experience. Rather than blindly smoking, you can lose yourself in a strain’s invigorating tastes and smells.

Terpenes are integral to flavors, aromas, odors, and even our inebriated responses to cannabis. They’re prime contributors to the “entourage effect.”

Specifically, terpenes and other components of the cannabis plant (e.g., its present cannabinoids) generate a more well-rounded experience for adult recreational users.

Bisabolol is the terpene discussed in this blog. Below, we’ll delve into the specificity of bisabolol, exploring what it adds to the cannabis strains in which it’s present.

What Is Bisabolol?

You wouldn’t be alone in wondering, “What is bisabolol?”

Aside from being a pain to pronounce, bisabolol (aka α-Bisabolol and levomenol) is most commonly derived from the chamomile flower, favored for its soothing capabilities.

The naturally occurring terpene is synonymous with its ability to add subtlety and depth to a cannabis strain with sweet, floral aromas.

Bisabolol’s standing as a highly stable sesquiterpene alcohol makes it more therapeutic than most terpenes [1].

You’ll commonly find bisabolol in cosmetic products due to its skin-based anti-inflammatory properties [2].

What Does Bisabolol Do In Cannabis?

Enjoying strains rich in bisabolol is a unique experience for many cannabis enthusiasts. The terpene triggers an intense sensory experience mixed with potent therapeutic effects.

Bisabolol goes beyond the aromas and scents when found in cannabis strains. Instead, it contributes to a more profound interaction with any given set of cannabinoids.

Most poignant with bisabolol is how it impacts the entourage effect. Bisobolol appears to be one of the most synergistic terpenes, helping activate THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids in a more nuanced manner. This helps generate a more conscious high that’s focused on relief and wellness.

One point worth mentioning is bisabolol’s role in topical analgesics.

Thanks to CBD-based formulas, topicals have more of a presence in the cannabis space than ever, and bisabolol has proven itself a potentially integral ingredient.

What Is Bisabolol Good For? What Are Its Therapeutic Benefits?

Broadly speaking, bisabolol’s therapeutic properties apply to reducing depression symptoms, bolstering well-being, and even offsetting insomnia.

Furthermore, studies indicate bisabolol can aid in kidney injury treatments. Due to its antioxidant traits, the terpene has displayed protective benefits and positive efficacy for kidney conditions [3].

Bisabolol works as an analgesic pain reliever, and evidence suggests its anti-inflammatory capabilities when applied and absorbed through the skin.

Additionally, bisabolol’s anti-inflammatory properties reduce skin irritation. Further research suggests it can reduce the production of cytokines and the resulting skin inflammation without causing side effects.

Cancer treatments are another therapeutic application of bisabolol. The terpene can potentially kill leukemia cells. It’s also believed to inhibit various forms of cancer (e.g., ovarian, breast, skin, and prostate).

The therapeutic hits keep coming with bisabolol, continuing with antibacterial and antifungal effects. Its fungicidal capabilities apply to Staphylococcus aureus and other common fungal infections.

When combined with tea tree oil, bisabolol had antimicrobial effects against halitosis (bad breath) bacteria, proving useful in oral healthcare products.

In addition to what’s already been discussed, bisabolol’s gastro-protective properties are noteworthy. Studies suggest it can offset damage to the digestive system. Bisabolol also helps protect against the gut-related side effects of the anti-inflammatory medicine diclofenac. The two might work synergistically.

Many believe bisabolol can help offset anxiety, potentially impacting the brain’s gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors to induce relaxation.

What Strains Have Bisabolol?

Bisabolol is a relaxing terpene that contributes to a sense of blissful calm when you indulge in cannabis strains rich in it.

The Revlato 41 hybrid contains bisabolol.

This strain’s effects include stress and pain relief. It also offers a body buzz and an uplifting sense of euphoria conducive to creativity. We’d be remiss to forget Revlato’s earthy, pine, and diesel flavors.

The Point Break hybrid also contains bisabolol.

Its orange-rind and woodsy scents and flavors are pleasant on the nose and tongue. It yields a full-bodied high that fills you with energy before you chill out and prepare to sleep. Point Break is a euphoric strain with sour, citrusy notes.

Bisabolol And Aromatherapy

Since bisabolol is derived from chamomile, its potent aromatherapeutic qualities should come as no surprise.

Bisabolol triggers gastrointestinal tract receptors in aromatherapy, relaxing smooth muscles [4]. Plus, bisabolol oil has anticarcinogenic properties that fight malignant glioma cells

Detecting Bisabolol In Cannabis Products

The most straightforward method of detecting bisabolol in cannabis products is reading the information provided in product descriptions on websites or the packaging.

With increasing regulations on cannabis products, dispensaries typically make this information seamlessly available because their products are lab-tested.

Still, you don’t always have the luxury of product descriptions. In this instance, smell your given strain for understated floral fragrances, chamomile, or sweet apple hints.

That said, we suggest not relying solely on your nose. Instead, rely on the expertise of in-store budtenders. Or, contact dispensaries online with inquiries. It’s best to know what’s in your cannabis before consuming it.

Precautions And Considerations

Contact dermatitis has been reported in Europe and the US as a potential allergic response to bisabolol [5].

Unless you’re using a cannabis topical, you likely don’t need to worry about allergic responses to bisabolol.

However, precautions and concerns about terpenes and cannabis go beyond allergies.

First and foremost, you don’t want to become dependent on any cannabis strain or terpene. Moderate use provides many therapeutic benefits—something we’re proud of at Stash.

Conscious and responsible cannabis usage is crucial in harnessing its most wellness-boosting properties. The line between moderate and overdoing it can be crossed in an instant. Be aware of your responses and your intake.

Conclusion

Bisabolol is a terpene that contributes strongly to the sensory experience of the cannabis strains in which it’s found. Furthermore, it has abundant therapeutic properties that show significant potential in improving the health of individuals dosing products containing it.

Enjoying strains with bisabolol promises an enriching and immersive experience.

Yet, the magic behind terpenes is their sheer number and abundance in cannabis.

To the above point, you won’t know your best blend of terpenes until you experiment (responsibly) with various strains and figure out the best balance for your needs.

Cannabis Terpenes: Humulene

A budding cannabis culture is emerging across the US in line with the rapidly spreading legalization of the plant.

Cannabis enthusiasts in green-friendly states like Illinois no longer have to hide their love in the shadows. They may profess it, study it, connect with it, and fully harness it for all its benefits and joy.

With the veil of stigma progressively vanishing, people are learning more about the cannabis plant, free to enjoy it as connoisseurs. A cannabis lover can explore the intricacies of a strain as a wine-lover does when they swish their glass around and discuss subtle notes and bouquets.

Part and parcel of this evolving appreciation for cannabis is a firmer grasp on the traits worth appreciating.

While potency is something many recreational cannabis users value, other factors play a role in the overall fulfillingness of the experience. Colors, aromas, and flavors—derived primarily from terpene content—all impact the quality of a given strain.

Humulene is an earthy terpene present in many cannabis strains. Its effects are unique, offering a distinctive smoking or vaping experience.

At Stash, we often advise our customers to try strains rich in humulene—we’ll explore why we do so in the article below.

What Is Humulene?

Before discussing the terpene in detail, it’s worth asking and answering the question: What is humulene?

Humulene’s primary function in plants is bolstering their defenses against agricultural pests and fungal infections [1]

Also known as alpha-caryophyllene, humulene chemically resembles beta-caryophyllene but isn’t identical. It occurs in the Humulus lupulus plant family (i.e., hops) [2]. The bitterness in humulene offsets the malty sweetness of many beers. It’s also present in basil, black pepper, sage, and ginseng [3]

Primary humulene aromas include woodsiness, spiciness, and earthiness. The taste can be bitter but balanced by an herbaceous, spicy quality.

Furthermore, humulene is a yellow-green, clear, pale liquid when separated from its natural plant material.

What Does Humulene Do In Cannabis?

We’ve discussed humulene’s earthy bitterness, but its contributions to cannabis strains are more than that.

Even flavor and scent-wise, humulene offers versatility. It pairs differently with other terpenes, sometimes offering a citrusy or fruity odor and taste on top of its trademark floral and herbaceous aromas.

Humulene can’t interact with endocannabinoid receptors as it can’t emulate cannabinoids. However, it can contribute to the entourage effect, aiding in a more robust and immersive cannabis experience wherever it’s involved.

Generally, humulene functions best with other terpenes—a valuable part of a greater sum.

Strains rich in humulene also have anti-pain and inflammation properties, and they can actually offset and prevent over-indulgent “munchy” sessions after smoking [4]

What Is Humulene Good For? What Are Its Therapeutic Benefits?

There is a belief that humulene produces reactive oxygen species, which function as chemicals to destroy cancer cells and inhibit tumor growth [5].

Some also think humulene offers allergy relief. It’s also in sage oil and is implemented into many traditional Chinese medicine remedies.

Additionally, ginseng is found in humulene. In Chinese medicine, ginseng increases energy and is an antibacterial compound [6].

Humulene might have anti-asthmatic properties [7]. Humulene can also benefit Metabolism due to its appetite-suppressing capabilities when interacting with beta-caryophyllene.

The anti-inflammatory properties are so potent in humulene that they’ve been compared to dexamethasone, a steroid recommended by the WHO [8].

Which Strains Have Humulene?

Humulene can play a role in sativas, indicas, and hybrids. It’s found in most cannabis strains, but some strains are higher than others in the terpene.

Since humulene doesn’t directly interact with our endocannabinoid receptors, it doesn’t directly impact a “high.” Still, it’s a versatile role player in different strains.

For instance, our Gas Station Sushi sativa contains humulene and has a spicy citrus scent. It stimulates the mind and is ideal for “activity” and “chill with friends” strains. It makes you feel energetic, blissful, and creative.

Our Candy Store hybrid is rich with alpha-humulene, unsurprisingly boasting spicy and floral notes and chockful of uplifting, soothing effects. The complex compilation of terpenes in this strain brings forth depth and nuance.

Stash’s Chem Scout indica, also possessing humulene, offers customers earthy, cake-like aromas and flavors. Additionally, it soothes, stimulates the mind, and offers pain relief, resulting in a blissful and calming experience.

Humulene’s presence in these vastly different strains shows its versatility. It enhances the effects of other terpenes to help produce high-quality cannabis that leaves a lasting impression.

Humulene And Aromatherapy

Humulene is an essential oil component of the hops plant, found explicitly in the flowering cone.

In fact, humulene can comprise up to 40% of the hops plants’ essential oil and is associated with the “hoppy” aroma in beer.

Humulene is in all kinds of aromatic plants worldwide. It’s present in pine trees, marsh elders, orange orchards, tobacco fields, and sunflower fields. You’ll find it in essential oils of plants such as sage, Japanese Spicebush, ginseng, ginger, and the Chinese laurel tree. It’s also present in Vietnamese coriander [9].

Identifying Humulene In Cannabis

Modern, legal cannabis is generally lab-tested and contains transparent information, such as a strain’s terpenes. Look for this information on the packaging. It should be conveyed clearly in writing.

However, information on the packaging and website product descriptions isn’t always available. Or your friends might have purchased a strain and shared it with you, removing it from its packaging.

So, if you wish to detect humulene with the power of your nose alone, smell for spice, earthiness, and fruitiness.

You typically don’t want to rely solely on your sense of smell to detect terpenes, though. Thus,  your best bet is purchasing from trusted sources, like the team at Stash.

Our budtenders have vast knowledge of terpenes like humulene and will steer you in the right direction.

Precautions And Considerations

Contact dermatitis and asthma are associated with caryophyllene, to which humulene is connected [10].

Beyond those reasonably negligible allergy concerns, other considerations and precautions exist.

Namely, don’t get too caught up in the potential therapeutic benefits of humulene. Yes, it can undoubtedly help you. However, the only way to maximize those benefits is through therapeutic doses.

Don’t get swayed by one exceptional cannabis experience. Less tends to be more.

Indulging too much in any strain will inevitably dull its effects. If you double and triple down day after day, you won’t enjoy it as you once did.

Remember, too, that humulene tends to mesh with whatever strain you’re purchasing. You’ll be sleepy if it’s an indica, while a sativa will make you more alert.

Don’t apply one specific characteristic with the terpene because such assertions could lead you awry, yielding an experience you weren’t mentally prepared for.

Conclusion

Humulene is a terpene with many therapeutic benefits (e.g., inflammation and appetite control), with bitter, spicy, and fruity flavors in notes.

It’s prevalent throughout most cannabis strains and contributes to the overall entourage effect of those strains.

While humulene is a dynamic terpene, it does its best work as a role player since it doesn’t interact with the endocannabinoid system. Thus, the strains containing it must be cultivated by growers who know how to harness and optimize it.

This preamble brings us to Stash Dispensary’s online menu

We’re committed to providing you with cannabis products that maximize each terpene, trichome, and all other components of a bud to improve your experience.

Cannabis Terpenes: Linalool

Adult-use cannabis might not be legal at the federal level. However, state after state continues legalizing the sales and consumption of such products for residents 21 and over.

It’s truly a new day in the US, especially in canna-friendly areas like Illinois, the home of Stash Dispensaries’ Peru and Orland Hills locations.

Those most familiar with cannabis are well aware of how moderation and responsible usage yield positive effects. There’s no longer any denying cannabis can provide health and wellness benefits instead of the scary outcomes spouted by anti-pot propaganda over the decades.

The usage of cannabis has ranges. It could be strictly recreational, or it could be therapeutic.

We’re not a medical dispensary, so if you wish to purchase cannabis products for medicinal or therapeutic purposes, we suggest speaking with your licensed healthcare provider.

With the above preamble in mind, terpenes are a component in cannabis that can enhance the recreational and therapeutic effects of a given strain.

The subject of this article will be one such terpene: Linalool. Continue onward to learn more.

What Is Linalool?

Like most terpenes, linalool exists beyond a cannabis context. It’s present in 200-plus species of plants, giving the spicy, floral scent [1].

Linalool is often isolated from plants and incorporated into beauty products, creams, candles, and essential oils. It’s also implemented as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages while frequently utilized in cosmetics.

One of the most prevalent linalool sources is lavender. The soothing effects and signature scent of lavender can be attributed to linalool. Neroli oil and rosewood are also common sources of the terpene.

Furthermore, linalool is present in birch, coriander, citrus, laurels, and more.

In cannabis, generally speaking, linalool is responsible for providing a sleep aid or sedative effect [2]

What Does Linalool Do? What Are Its Unique Properties?

Before delving into more medicinal components of linalool, we’ll look more generally at how it impacts the recreational cannabis experience.

Primarily, the terpene’s impact is in its aromas.

The brain’s emotion and memory centers are intrinsically connected to your sense of smell. Thus, a potential cause (the floral lavender scene) and effect (relaxed and improved mood) relationship exists [3].

Increased research implies that brain processing can be impacted by these terpenes. They may modulate brain cell behaviors [4].

What Is Linalool Good For? What Are Its Medicinal Properties?

Patients often seek cannabis strains with linalool to offset generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Studies involving mice showed the test subjects continuing to work in fear-inducing environments to escape what appeared to be a hopeless scenario [5].

Furthermore, linalool, as the main compound in lavender essential oils, appeared to lower human participants’ Hamilton Anxiety Rating scores [6]

Linalool-rich strains might bolster the immune system to offset adverse responses to stress. One study on rats found that linalool prevented white blood cells (immune system cells) from shifting destructively [7]. Experts hypothesize linalool triggers a parasympathetic response in the body.

A positive antimicrobial effect appears to exist in linalool-rich strains, protecting against insects. This could benefit individuals who need to stave off bacteria that could damage their cells [8].

Linalool is most known as a sedative, implemented into traditional medicines to relax muscles and minds. Moreover, it might have anti-epileptic and anticonvulsant characteristics [9].

What Strains Have Linalool?

Our 1g LA Diamond Pre-Roll from Royale is a hybrid strain featuring linalool prominently. Its minty and earthy notes combine with a gradual, relaxing body high that bolsters creativity.

We also carry the Shortbread strain, a flower-popcorn product from High Supply™. It’s an energizing, uplifting sativa with potent, lemony notes and a doughy sweetness.

NEZ’s Daily Grapes hybrid flower is brimming with linalool, producing an impactful body high without muddling up your mind, ensuring you remain functional. The flavor is a combination of rubbery diesel and grape.

Find these strains and more in our online menu. Filter your shopping experience (or product research) by typing ‘linalool’ into the search field.

How Is Linalool Used In Aromatherapy?

Linalool’s aromatherapy applications revolve around calming and relaxing the mind and body, helping combat insomnia, muscle tension, anxiety, and inflammation. It’s present in essential oils, other natural remedies, and traditional medicines, focusing primarily on stress reduction.

When inhaled (outside of cannabis usage), linalool offers a sedating effect [1].

Precautions And Considerations

Linalool is present in many topical products. It’s possible to have a hypersensitivity to the terpene, which can lead to allergic reactions like stomatitis and mouth ulcers [10].

The above concerns aren’t significant in cannabis products (although, be weary of topical cannabis with linalool if you’re predisposed to such sensitivities). That said, it’s wise to approach any therapy incorporating cannabis usage with caution.

Yes—cannabis has therapeutic benefits, but it can also be misused just as easily. Over-indulgence and abuse can offset all the benefits of a terpene like linalool.

Speak with healthcare professionals before treating yourself with any kind of cannabis, and establish parameters for responsible, safe usage.

Detecting Linalool In Cannabis Strains

Start by reading product descriptions and other label components to detect whether linalool is present in a cannabis strain.

Sometimes, you may not find all present terpenes clearly outlined on a label. In this instance (if you’re in a dispensary), speak with a budtender—they should know whether linalool is present.

In the absence of product descriptions and budtenders, smell the bud and see if you can detect a lavender, floral scent combined with citrus zest hints.

Conclusion

Linalool is a calming, sedating terpene that can limit anxiety, stress, depression, and physical pain in specific situations. Anybody who seeks potent relaxing properties in their cannabis strains will likely appreciate what linalool offers as a terpene.

Still, we’re only in the infancy of legalized recreational adult-use cannabis in the US. Thus, our knowledge of terpenes like linalool and how they can enhance strains remains in its beginning stages.

As research becomes more widespread, cultivators will grow increasingly capable of maximizing the therapeutic benefits of terpenes like linalool.

Learn more about cannabis strains, the terpenes they carry, and their many uses and benefits by contacting Stash Dispensaries today. Or, check out our online menu to perform your own independent product research.
